Blinded By Uncertainty

Devotional Thought

In Luke 24, two disciples walked the road to Emmaus overwhelmed by disappointment. They had hoped Jesus would redeem Israel, but the crucifixion seemed to shatter everything they believed. As they walked, the risen Jesus joined them, yet they were kept from recognizing Him. Rather than immediately revealing Himself, Jesus patiently led them through the Scriptures, showing that the Messiah had to suffer before entering His glory. Eventually, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.

Many people desire certainty before they trust God. Yet the Emmaus story teaches that certainty often grows through walking with Jesus rather than standing at a distance demanding proof. The disciples’ understanding deepened as they listened to His voice, learned His Word, and experienced His presence. Their hearts burned within them before their eyes were opened.

The Christian life is not a sprint but a lifelong walk. As we spend time with Christ through Scripture, prayer, worship, and fellowship, we discover His faithfulness. We learn that He is not only Yahweh—the sovereign God—but also Immanuel, God with us. He becomes our Friend, Companion, Savior, and Lord. Over time, His presence produces a deep confidence that is not based on our performance but on His grace. This confidence enables us to face trials, losses, doubts, and challenges with hope because we know the One who walks beside us.

The more we walk with Jesus, the more clearly we see Him. And the more clearly we see Him, the more our lives are transformed by His presence.

Discussion Questions

1. What is something you have become more certain about over time through experience rather than through immediate proof?

2. Why do you think the disciples failed to recognize Jesus on the road to Emmaus? What might God have been teaching them through that experience?

3. The disciples said, “We had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.” Have you ever struggled because God did not work the way you expected Him to?

4. Jesus pointed the disciples back to the Scriptures to help them understand who He really was. Why is Scripture essential for growing in faith and certainty?

5. What is the difference between believing that God exists and having a personal relationship with Jesus?

6. The sermon emphasized that certainty grows through “walking with Jesus.” What practices help you stay aware of Christ’s presence throughout your week?

7. How does knowing that God sees everything about you become comforting rather than intimidating when viewed through the lens of grace?

8. Which aspect of God’s character do you most need to be reminded of right now—His provision, peace, power, presence, forgiveness, or something else? Why?

9. The sermon described Jesus as both Friend and Lord. Why is it important to embrace both truths rather than focusing on only one?

10. Can you share a time when God used a difficult circumstance to deepen your trust in Him or transform an area of your life?

Action Step

Set aside time each day this week to intentionally walk with Jesus through prayer and Scripture, asking Him to reveal Himself more clearly to you.

Then identify one person who may be struggling with doubt, disappointment, or spiritual questions, and share with them how Jesus has been faithful in your own life. Invite them to talk with you about who Jesus is and what He has done for them through His death and resurrection.
