The Promise of Freedom

Exodus 14: “I will Save You!”

You cannot understand the Gospel without understanding the Exodus narrative.

Matthew: “Out of Egypt I have called my son.”

Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

-Luke 9:30-31 (NIV)

Hebrews 3-4: Jesus is the greater Moses.

By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land;

-Hebrews 11:29A (NIV)

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

-1 Corinthians 10:1-2 (NIV)

The Exodus is a model of our own salvation.

What is our salvation really about?

First: Salvation is about getting out of bondage!

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!”

-Exodus 14:5 (NIV)

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”

-Exodus 14:10-12 (NIV)

Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, and they believed. And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.

-Exodus 4:29-31 (NIV)

The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

-Exodus 16:3 (NIV)

  1. We are indeed objectively free.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

-Romans 5:1 (NIV)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

-Romans 8:1 (NIV)

We are objectively freed from God’s judicially wrath and punishment toward sin.

2. We are subjectively enslaved.

The book of Galatians is about how the Christians in Galatia are objectively free—yet—they keep drifting back into a form of works-righteousness.

3. We are objectively free from the enslavement to the law. It no longer has the power to enslave us.

Objectively, the law of sin and death has no power over you.

Subjectively, the bondage you feel to sinful habits is still present.

4. The bondage to our idols remains.

Idols: The things you worship, serve and depend upon for your joy.

God has freed you from things you allow to enslave you because you have not yet worked the freedom into your life.

First: Salvation or redemption is about getting out—of bondage and slavery.

Second: How do we get out of slavery? We cross over by grace.

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

-Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV)

However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

-Romans 4:5 (NIV)

Receive God’s deliverance not by works but by faith.

Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

-John 5:24 (NIV)

Was it not you who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea so that the redeemed might cross over?

-Isaiah 51:10 (NIV)

and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

-Exodus 14:22 (NIV)

You are not saved by the quality of your faith but by the object of your faith. Your Redeemer!

Exodus is saying:

“Stand still and see that God has already fought the big battle for you and has already accomplished your salvation.”

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

-Hebrews 12:4 (NIV)

How do we bring about our salvation so that we deal with these layers of bondage so that we are increasingly becoming “subjectively” freed?

One: Salvation is getting out of bondage.

Two: We get out by crossing over.

Three: Why is it even possible to get out?

Noah’s Flood:

Why water? Water represented Chaos in the ancient world.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

-Genesis 1:2 (NIV)

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, 'Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, "Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians"? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!' Moses answered the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.' Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Why are you crying out to me?'

-Exodus 14:10-14 (NIV)

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land.

-Exodus 14:21 (NIV)

I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.

-Leviticus 11:45 (NIV)

Here is the Gospel: We are saved by faith alone which does not remain alone.

The Exodus Story Reveals Our Salvation:

  • He got us out Objectively

We are freed (past tense) from the penalty of sin.

  • He is getting us out Subjectively

We are getting freed (present tense) from the power of sin.

  • He will get us out Practically...

We will be free (future tense) from the presence of sin.

Well may our accuser Roar. Of sins that I have done. I know them all and thousands more. Jehovah knoweth none.

-His Be the Victor's Name, Samuel Whitlock Gandy

Be still and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you!
