Numbers 6

1. SIN

I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.

-Romans 7:19-21

2. EXPECTATIONS NOT FULFILLED

Expectation of the world lures you into sin-and it holds you captive.

-Merisa Marquez

3. LACK PASSION

Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When a man or woman makes a special vow, namely, the vow of a Nazirite, to live as a Nazirite for the Lord, he shall abstain from wine and strong drink; he shall consume no vinegar, whether made from wine or strong drink, nor shall he drink any grape juice nor eat fresh or dried grapes. All the days of his consecration he shall not eat anything that is produced from the grapevine, from the seeds even to the skin. All the days of his vow of consecration no razor shall pass over his head. He shall be holy until the days are fulfilled which he lives as a Nazirite for the Lord; he shall let the locks of hair on his head grow long. All the days of his life as a Nazirite for the Lord he shall not come up to a dead person. He shall not make himself unclean for his father or for his mother, for his brother or for his sister, when they die, because his consecration to God is on his head. All the days of his consecration he is holy to the Lord’

-Numbers 6:1-8

The Lord said to Moses, 'Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of dedication to the Lord, as a Nazirite.’

-Numbers 6:1-2

Special: Pli’(pala) = To act in an extraordinary way.

Nazir = Nazarite = to set apart

Together: Do extraordinary things so that something extraordinary might be done in you by God.

Then Manoah took a young goat, together with the grain offering, and sacrificed it on a rock to the Lord. And the Lord did an amazing thing while Manoah and his wife watched: As the flame blazed up from the altar toward heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the ground.

-Judges 13:19-20

Amazing: Pli’ = Miraculous, Supernatural, Extraordinary.

If a man or woman wants to make a special vow.

-Numbers 6:1

This is somebody who dedicates oneself to God and is desperate for something supernatural, miraculous, or wondrous to happen!

The mind which asks for a non-miraculous Christianity is a mind in the process of relapsing from Christianity into mere religion.

-C.S. Lewis, Miracles

3 Components of the Vow

First: No wine!

. . .they must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, not even the seeds or skins. . .

-Numbers 6:3b

Second: No Razor.

During the entire period of their Nazirite vow, no razor may be used on their head. They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the Lord is over; they must let their hair grow long.

-Numbers 6:5

Third: No dead Body.

Throughout the period of their dedication to the Lord, the Nazirite must not go near a dead body. Even if their own father or mother or brother or sister dies, they must not make themselves ceremonially unclean on account of them, because the symbol of their dedication to God is on their head.

-Numbers 6:6-7

1. No wine: Give up something that is central.

2. No razor: Accountability and Offering.

3. No dead body: Do not be defiled in any way.

How badly do you want to overcome SIN that is plaguing you?

Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.

-Colossians 3:5b-9

How badly do you want direction /peace in an unfulfilled expectation?

How badly do you want NEW passion for the things of God?

When the people saw the cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, they would stand and bow down in front of their own tents. Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting.

-Exodus 33:10-11

I want deliberately to encourage this mighty longing after God. The lack of it has brought us to our present low state. The stiff and wooden quality about our religious lives is a result of our lack of holy desire. Complacency is the deadly foe of all spiritual growth. Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation of Christ to His people. He awaits to be wanted. Too bad that with many of us He waits for so long, so very long in vain.

-A. W. Tozer

1. TAKE THE NAZIRITE VOW

This is somebody who dedicates oneself to God and is desperate for something supernatural, miraculous, or wondrous to happen!

A. Give up something that is central to YOUR life.

B. Share it with community group or trusted Christian friends.

C. Stay away from anything that defiles YOU.

IT IS SPACE YOU ARE GIVING TO GOD TO MOVE IN YOUR LIFE—TO DO SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY SO SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY CAN BE DONE IN US.

2. CELEBRATE THE END OF THE VOW

Now this is the law of the Nazirites when the period of their dedication is over. They are to be brought to the entrance to the tent of meeting. There they are to present their offerings to the LORD.

-Numbers 6:13-14a

June 5th Prayer Night we will be ending the vow. Please come back with your card and we will complete it then.
