Philippians 2:3–11

Biblical leadership is not about position or platform. Scripture defines leadership as influence, and every believer has a sphere where they affect others—at home, work, church, or community. The real question is not whether we lead, but how we lead.

Philippians 2 shows us the model: Jesus. Though He was equal with God, He did not cling to status. Instead, He emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and humbled Himself all the way to the cross. That is the foundation for Christian leadership.

The sermon highlights three pillars.

First, leadership begins with identity. Believers lead best when they know who they are in Christ—chosen, loved, and secure. Identity stabilizes leadership so that criticism, praise, or pressure do not define us.

Second, leadership requires humility. Humility is not weakness or self-hatred; it is choosing servanthood over self-promotion. Jesus washed feet. He carried a towel, not a title.

Third, leadership must be shaped by purpose. Purpose keeps us steady when leadership becomes difficult and aligns our lives with God’s mission rather than personal ambition.

Biblical leadership is ultimately discipleship. It is not enough to agree with truth; following Jesus requires action. God anchors us in identity, shapes us through humility, and directs us by purpose so that we can lead like Christ wherever He has placed us.

Discussion Questions

1. What stood out most to you from the picture of leadership in Philippians 2?

2. Why is identity in Christ essential before we can lead others well?

3. In what ways do insecurity or misplaced identity affect the way people lead?

4. What does humility look like in everyday leadership situations (home, work, relationships)?

5. Why do you think servant leadership is so difficult in a culture that values recognition and status?

6. Do you feel confident that you know what your purpose is? How does knowing your purpose help you endure when leadership feels heavy or unnoticed?

7. Where has God placed you right now to influence others, even in small ways?

8. What is one area where you sense God calling you to lead more like Jesus this week?

Action Step

This week, choose one of the three pillars—identity, humility, or purpose—and pray intentionally about it each day. Then take one concrete step to lead like Jesus in your current sphere: serve someone quietly, act from security rather than insecurity, or pursue God’s purpose instead of personal comfort.
