You Thought God Was a Silent Spectator
Devotional Thought
Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath… We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
-Hebrews 6:17–19 (NIV)
We love comeback stories because they awaken hope in us. But what if we knew the ending ahead of time? What if, in the middle of difficulty, we were absolutely certain that victory was already secured?
That is the heart of the Gospel.
In Genesis 15, God makes a covenant with Abraham. Abraham asks, “How can I know?” In response, God alone passes between the pieces of the sacrifice—an ancient way of saying: If this covenant is broken, I will bear the consequences.
Centuries later, that promise echoes in Isaiah 53 and is fulfilled in Jesus. God was “cut off from the land of the living.” The cross was covenant fulfillment. The penalty was paid. The promise secured.
Our hope does not rest on our consistency but on God’s faithfulness. The kingdom is here—but not yet in full. We will experience setbacks. We will suffer. We will doubt. But because of Christ, our story ends well.
That hope is an anchor for the soul—firm and secure.
