Holy Sexuality

Christians believe that God has spoken through His Son and through His revelation to us in the Bible.

Christians believe that God’s word is not arbitrarily given but is motivated out of love and the desire for human flourishing.

If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

-Romans 8:31-32

Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.' That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

-Genesis 2:19-25

But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

-Genesis 2:20b

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'

-Genesis 2:15, 18

Helper: Hebrew: Ezer: “One who acts and assists in fulfilling a task.”

Marriage here on earth is not the ultimate; it’s the penultimate. The ultimate awaits us in eternity, and you were created for it—regardless of whether you’re single or married. When you feel certain discontentment in your marriage, even when your marriage is healthy and good, this is normal. There’s only one marriage that will bring you ultimate contentment. Heaven will mean complete union and consummated glory with Christ—what greater joy is there than that?

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.' That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

-Genesis 2:21-25

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife...

-Genesis 2:24

Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

-Romans 4:4-5

And they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

-Genesis 2:24b-25

What then is the Biblical sexual ethic?

1.  Chastity in singleness.

2.  Faithfulness in marriage.

Heterosexuality is not Holy Sexuality.

Porneia: “Sex outside the design and purpose and parameters of God’s will.”

For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

-Matthew 15:19

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

-Romans 13:13

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.

-1 Corinthians 5:1

You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

-1 Corinthians 6:13

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.

-1 Corinthians 6:18

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.

-Ephesians 5:3

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

-Colossians 3:5

Porneia: Sexual Immorality is all sexual activity that does not conform with origin and design.

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

-Romans 6:1-7

We all have good desires and bad desires, and the moral value of any desire is determined by whether its end transgresses or conforms to God’s standard.

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

-1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

-Colossians 3:5

Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

-Hebrews 12:1b-4

Some people believe that sexual orientation is innate and fixed; however, sexual orientation develops across a person’s lifetime.

-American Psychiatric Association

1 - Just because I have a propensity toward something does not make it right.

Your affections in this world--and your desires in your innermost being--have very little to do with the reality of other options that stir in your heart and soul.

It does not matter how you got where you are.

You must be born again.

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

-Romans 8:13

2 - Your feelings or disposition do not determine your identity nor objective morality.

If we truly love others, we will come alongside them and bear their burdens, while at the same time holding each other accountable.

3 - In Christ we can overcome the desires of the flesh.

But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

-Romans 6:17-18

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

-1 Corinthians 10:13

With the calling of God comes the supernatural power of God to give us our ultimate victories over sin and death.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

-Hebrews 4:14-16

Gender Dysphoria: the distress someone experiences when they have a disconnect between their bodily sex and internal sense of gender.

Among children who struggle with gender dysphoria, 80-95 percent of those who are allowed to mature naturally through puberty resolve their dysphoria. In contrast, those who undergo physical transition interventions such as puberty blockers and other irreversible surgeries, often do not see any lasting benefits with regards to mental health. In fact, many patients experience permanent damage to their cardiovascular health, bone density, and reproductive functions.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power.
