5 Verses About Serving

1. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45

One of God’s greatest callings on this earth is for us to love others. We can love others by serving. God poured out His life on the cross through the sacrifice of His son Jesus, it was the greatest measure of service. Jesus came to this earth to serve and love on others, looking at His ministry and all those He encountered and invested in shows that.

2. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:9-13

Some people might ask, how can I serve others or where do I start. I think the simplest way to begin serving others is to do what we find passions in or what tugs at our heartstrings. For me, I love and serve others by praying with them. Coming alongside a friend who is struggling and offering prayer is an act of service. I have a gift of hospitality and if I’m really honest, I would like to be a mini Joanna Gaines and so I serve others by practicing hospitality. I love to host dinners, have coffee with friends, make and give thoughtful gifts as a form of serving others.

3. Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. Isaiah 58:10

One of the greatest ways that we can serve others is simply by helping to provide for their basic needs. Feed the hungry. Help those in need. I remember getting a flat tire on the way home once and this group of college students stopped and changed my tire for me. I felt so encouraged and cared for and at the end of the conversation I came to find out they were Christians. Whenever I see a homeless person outside of a restaurant, I always try to offer them a meal.

4. Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8

A simple act of service is saying, “Here I am, send me!”. Go on that mission trip whether local or global. As believers we are called to come into the church and community, to grow, and then we are called to GO! We are present day disciples. My greatest life experiences were in the mission field serving in Mexico, Camden, Peru and then Haiti.

Some might ask, but God hasn’t called me to go so what can I do?

5. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” 2 Corinthians 9:7-9

For some, we are called to serve by giving sacrificially. Support that college student as they give of their time to the mission field. Donate to Houston or Florida. Give to a local food pantry or buy bikes and gifts for our Christmas season.
