God Will Never Give You More Than You Can Handle

Has someone ever told you, “God won’t give you more than you can handle”? This common phrase, while said with the best intentions, may not necessarily be all that comforting. Especially when we are in the middle of a dark valley. We live in a world where there is so much pain and suffering – the loss of a loved one, battling cancer, betrayal from someone you trusted, financial burdens. The list can continue on and on. These are things that we cannot handle on our own. They make us feel like we are in over our heads. They are too much to bear alone. But you know what?

There will be things in our life that we can’t handle, but God will never give us more than He can handle.

We serve an Almighty God who loves us and reminds us throughout the Bible to give our burdens to him.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you. Psalm 55:22a

When I see the word cast, I think about fishing. As a little girl, I grew up fishing with my dad. I started out with a small fishing rod and graduated to a bigger one the older I got. No matter what size fishing rod I was using, my aim was to cast the bait out as far as I possibly could. That is how God wants us to bring our burdens to Him. He wants us to throw our burdens at Him. Casting your bait when fishing takes effort and energy. The same goes for casting our burdens to God. It is easy to just drop our burdens at our feet or toss them to the side, but it takes effort to fully cast them to God. He doesn’t want us to carry them alone. He wants to carry them for us. All we have to do is give them to Him. God wants us to fully throw them out to Him so He can bear them.

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19

God wants us to be near to Him. He wants us to give Him our tears, worries, fears, anxiety and pain. God may be giving us more than we can handle right now so we will realize that we can’t handle it on our own! He puts things in our lives that will draw us closer to Him and that will remind us that He is in control and we can’t do it on our own and that we don’t need to do it on our own! So, in the midst of those times when we feel like we just can’t handle it and when we feel like we are in over our heads, remember this – there will be things in our life that we can’t handle, but God will never give us more than He can handle. We just need to cast them to Him and draw close to Him and let Him carry us.
