Reflections and Goal Setting for 2019

My boss jokingly says, “New Year, New You” every year as we talk about the next half of our fiscal year and even goal set at work for our team and for our professional goals. As we reflect upon 2018 and plan in 2019, I take a few hours by myself and go to a coffee shop with my planner and journal and work through some questions.

Thinking of 2018, ask yourself these reflection questions:

  • What was my word of the year and how did I embrace it? (this is more reflection than journaling)
  • What are Three Things that I am thankful for?
  • What were Two of my Favorite Memories from 2018?
  • What is one thing that I am proud of?
  • What was one hard lesson that I learned?

Two of my favorite memories that I highly recommend you do in 2019 were trips that I ended up doing within the same week. The first was a trip to Saved By the Max, the 90’s pop shop restaurant in Hollywood. It was completely nostalgic as a 90’s kid as I got to dress up as Jessie Spano and eat dinner at the beloved Max dinner, and kick up my feet on Mr. Belding’s desk. My second favorite trip was seeing Joanna Gaines’ vision come to life as I took a three-day trip with my best friend to wander the streets of Waco, Texas. I’ll help you plan your trip with your hubby or besties! I researched all the things for a year.

For me the hardest question to contemplate over is the last one. Maybe you can quickly recall upon that lesson, or maybe it is a lesson that you are still sitting in and learning from. In complete vulnerability with you now, my lesson that I am still standing in is reminding myself that I possess value and worthiness without affirmation. Words of affirmation is one of my top strengths, at least within the workplace. My value and worth comes from God and he calls me beloved. People invest time in what they see as priority, and it’s not always you and that’s okay You are no less valuable.

Then looking into 2019, plan and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Three new things I want to try?
  • Three places that I want to go?
  • Two things that I am looking forward to?
  • Two ways that I can help and give back to my church or community?
  • One thing I want to get better at?

One of the ways that I wanted to give back in 2018 was by serving at the church’s Night to Shine. It was so much fun and God did so much in my heart that night.

Dear Lord- may this new year bring deep growth personally in relationship with you and may this year be better than the last and full of new memories, laughter, and travel as I glorify your Name.
